OVERVIEW
Dark and elegant, poetic and fierce, soft and powerful; Le Portrait de Petit Cossette is all of these. Petit Cossette’s forte is in its instrumental masterpieces, fluidly composed by Yuki Kajiura. Le Portrait de Petit Cossette’s essence is ensnared in the ballads which fill the viewers’ ear, completing a powerful trinity of story, art, and music. It is by far one of the best original soundtracks of last year.
THE GOOD
Somewhere I belong
I have a soft spot for the elegant sound of the violin, and “Somewhere I belong†hit it on the head. This is a fine example of an accenting background song that adds that extra something to the show. Hitoshi Konno moves his bow softly, creating a fluid violin solo that is overwhelming not to the ears, but to the heart.
Moonflower
Mitsuru Soma on the flute, Yuki Kujiura on the piano and Ikuo Kakehashi on percussions accompany Yuri Kasahara to create a haunting piece of music. Kasahara sings a chilling chorus perfectly fitting of Petit Cossette, with the others keeping the pace slow and simple. Soma’s flute stands out as it leads the group through the dark sheet music.
Unhallowed
“Unhallowed†takes Petit Cossette’s main theme and transforms it. The Konno Hitoshi Group plucks their strings in the re-creation with a fresh accompaniment from Kajiura. It is short and sweet, running only one minute and forty-five seconds; nonetheless “Unhallowed†fits the mold uniformly.
Breakdown
Music does not have to be complex to be moving, as proven by “Breakdownâ€. Only the sounds of two instruments make up this song’s body and soul: Kajiura’s piano and a simple guitar. Both caress each other, weaving together like dancers teasing each other across the dance floor. The chemistry and the ballad are both perfect.
A prophet’s dream
Like a snowball rolling down a hill, “A prophet’s dream†gathers power as it rolls on. At first only a tambourine and strings start it off, but soon new instruments join the play. The drums and flute march slowly, raising the song to higher notes and adding the extra tones needed to clear par.
Jewel (Hoseki)
Yuriko Kaida sings the entrancing lyrics of “Jewelâ€, pulling the listener in by the ears. The Konno Hitoshi Group, bass, and drums give her a helping hand by providing a subtle background for her vocals. Ending in a simplistic version of the main theme played by a chime, “Jewel†finishes Petit Cossette on the right foot.
THE BAD
Evocation
“Evocation†is not a bad song, just not as good as its sister songs. It is fast and full of tunes not found in any of the other tracks (other than the line played by the violin). Something about “Evocation†just doesn’t work for me, but I am hard-pressed to pinpoint exactly what. Maybe it is because of how much it stands out from the rest, or how the violin is played too fast to really enjoy. It could be the rave-like lyrics consisting of a single phrase. It could, in the end, be a mix of all three.
