« on: May 04, 2007, 02:43:10 PM »
Ladies, Gentlemen, and Tentacle Monsters wellllcome to...

Best of the Best Contest #1

In this thread, you, the forum members of The Nihon Review will nominate what you feel to be each staff member's most awesomest review from the past two months, and then vote which is the "Best of the Best"

Here are the rules:

1.  You may nominate only one review per staff member.
1a.  You do not need to nominate a review for every staff member.
1b.  Previous winners may not be nominated.
1c.  Only reviews published in the past two months may be nominated. (3/4 - 5/4)
1d.  If you are a staff member, you may nominate your own work.
1e.  Nominations close fifteen days after the thread announcing the contest is posted. (Last day to nominate is 5/19)

2.  Voting will commence the day after nominations end (5/20) and will be open for fifteen days. (polls close 6/3)
2a.  You may vote for only one review.
2b.  Whether or not you agree with the opinion in a review should have no bearing on it being voted best of the best.  We are looking for good writing in this contest.
2c.  In order for your ballot to be counted, you must explain why you feel the review you chose is the best of the best You do not need to write a thesis, a sentence or two will do.

No no you've got it all wrong. It should be a competition for the worst of the worst.

Why can't this be worst review of all-time instead of last two months.

I would so win this one.-GS (fun, I haven't used "edit another person's post in a while)

Changed to make it Best of the Best.  Better to be positive than negative.

Is this too much reading?  Should we make this one month of reviews instead of two?

...or did I get all excited for nothing.

Kuma, I suggest you delete this thread then repost with the title "Best of the Best Contest #1"  (Copy and paste what you have)

I'll try to float the other concept with a different title.

I recommend Mobile Suit, RX-0 and Unicorn from the Unicorn OST.

I'll only vote in the final, since I feel that my nominations have very little meaning unless I spend lot of time and thinking just trying to figure out which one is the best from Shadowmage's batch.

Okay, I spot several problems.
1. Since everybody gets one vote and not many people are voting, how should we determine which review to use in case of a tie?
2. At times, it becomes tedious to read over all the reviews to see which one is the best.  (ie me)  Can we shorten the list to the three/four most recent reviews a person wrote in the future?
(Yes, this hurts freedom of choice, but we could make a "recommended candidates" list and post the three/four most recent while saying anything from the past two months is eligible.)

I recommend Mobile Suit, RX-0 and Unicorn from the Unicorn OST.

Hey, I've read every single review on this site, so you should have to too. :p

Edit:  I think next time the staff should compile a shortlist from each reviewer and have the public choose from that, rather than just throwing them all to the public.  Maybe staff members could nominate their own shortlists.  Oh well, this is still very much in the experimental stage.  Nonetheless, if it becomes a regular thing, I think it should be held quarterly and the winner get some sort of (crappy) prize... like the respect of their peers OMG!  ¯\(°_o)/¯

You mean if I win, I'll finally start getting respect?   :)

Now, all I have to do is learn to write better reviews.

If there is a tie, there will be a run-off contest open for a week.  If that ends in a tie, then the contest ends in a draw.  If anyone has a better way to proceed, please let me know.  I just don't see how else to run it.

EDIT:  You meant which review should make it to the finals.  I guess in case of a tie the reviewer chooses which review to use in the finals.

I think you're on the right track, Shadowmage, in the future, staff should nominate their best two or three reviews and then let the public vote.

I'm noticing that staff aren't nominating their own work.  You're allowed to, but of course you don't have to.
