Our next project?
« on: January 31, 2006, 05:53:19 PM »
What should we do next? Suggestions?

I'm thinking of doing something related to either music or games.

We are currently fixing up the History of Anime editorial. That will be our second editorial (was actually the first in AMGReviews v3.0).

"Methods to Our Madness" - How we write our reviews. As in, how each reviewer goes about his/her writing their review (and anything else we do for our reviews).
I fell off the wagon and now I can't stop.

For me that would be a short article.

"I get bored.  I write a crappy rev iew and turn it in.  Tama beats me senseless.  I go back and write a better review."

I like the idea though.

Edit- I'd also like to see us eventually do the "Which aspect of [Anime, Games, or Music] is most important," that we were talking about some time ago.

I would like to do that.

"Story." Of course I would elaborate...

I just want to be able to contribute to whatever we do next.

I should write something about what it takes to be an administrator.

But it would suck horribly because 1.) I don't do anything and 2.) I wouldn't know what I was doing even if I did anything.

I'm all for that idea.  People need to have a better idea of where each of us stand on what is important in anime/games/etc.  Depending on how busy I get I might even be willing to take charge of planning and organizing it.  I just won't be able to code it or upload it.

I'm all for doing something game related.  Were you thinking of a recap thing like we did for anime, something like a preview, or something else entirely?

Can you imagine a report on the history of gaming? It would be a mile long, and would have to start out by defining how we invented baseball.

"In the beginning, there was baseball, a game created by a bunch of dorks somewhere in New York. Hah, New York, what king of queer british-**** name is that? Anyway, by the 1970's rolled around, people were finally realizing baseball sucks, and thereupon they had no real use for their televisions. So someone got the great idea to create an actual, sustainable purpose for the TV..."

No, Bowling is awesome because of "Let's Bowl"

Baseball is awesome because it is.  It has nothing to do with Asians liking it.

All right. Stop being off-topic.

I've got it. I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but I keep forgetting. Let's do a "Greatest Songs of Anime" editorial. Originally, I wanted to cast votes for it, where the readership would have a say. But nah, that's too time consuming and it would obviously be skewed because, well, the songs the public think are the "best" are NOT the "best" (being subjective for a bit here...). I think this is how it should work:

- We choose about 25 songs. 10 is too little to capture the scope of anime music and 50 is way too much to do in a few months, let alone a few weeks.
- This should be an ongoing process. I know it will take A LOT of time, so there must be some sense of patience as the editorial won't be published until, maybe the end of Spring!
- Before we can choose the "25 best songs" we must nominate songs. We do this by having each staff member "nominate" AS MANY songs as they would like. Nominations will be open up for a certain time frame.
- From the nominations, we will choose "songs that are really good," say, about 60. Then from that much smaller pool, we start, from the #1 spot to the #25 spot, to argue for certain songs. Every staff member has a say and the spot will not be chosen UNTIL the ENTIRE staff agrees. This is the longest process because we will argue from light to night, especially for the #1-5 positions.
- Since this is an "editorial," I guess it will be staff only. So the readers have no say :(
- Nominations are based on songs that appear on soundtracks or have been used in an anime. It can be vocal or just instrumental.

Of course, the rules can be changed. This is still in the "pre-production" process.

Sooooo.....Any thoughts? Staff or non-staff are welcomed to comment.

Please....be productive. We're not nominating anything yet. We're discussing the "concept" of the editorial.

Let's stop the horsing around and get to work, please.

Wow, that's an ambitious project, but I think I'd be up for it.  I have a feeling songs from Cowboy Bebop and FLCL will dominate the list.  Fingers crossed that no one brings up "Fly Me To the Moon" or other Eva tracks.

The deal with Bebop and FLCL songs dominating the list is that it sort of can't be helped. I think it is wise just to see a song for what it really is and ignore all biases and distracting labels like what anime it belongs to and who wrote it. I encourage that we should compile a Best 25 that has great variation, being not just all "pop" or "rock," but with maybe some blues or clasical...and variations from different anime, too (I seem to be contradicting myself with this statement, but it can't be helped because readers will have that bias); however, I would not mind if say half of the songs are from Cowboy Bebop or some other anime. Just as long as the songs are "the best" then it is all right.

Are you going to judge their quality in its purest form, or are you also going to consider the question of 'how well this music fit into the anime, how well it expressed certain moods, and how that ultimately tells us what kind of character he is, what kind of story we are going to be told, etc etc'.

Personally I think the latter should play a bit of a role.  It's difficult to remove bias when it comes to music because tastes tend to be so diverse.  I think having "how well it compliments its anime" as one of the criteria could help bring us all onto a similar wavelength when it comes to agreeing what's best and what's not.

I don't see it as so. I think such a criteria would lend itself to more bias: certainly songs from memorable/favorite anime would be "ranked" higher than others because they "compliment better." In addition, music must be judged in its purest form, without any attachments and labels. Our soundtrack reviews judge each song based on its merit as a standalone, not as a compliment. Such an ideology is perfect for coming to a conclusion based on the music itself--that is what really matters, not the anime.

I have to admit though that it is nearly impossible to remove bias that comes with our "favorite songs." 'Why are they really our favorites?' is a good question to ask in order to understand this "bias." Komm, Susser Todd, in my opinion, is one of the greatest anime songs. But this opinion is not based entirely on the song itself; it has some emotional impact each time it is heard because it is so reminiscent of Evangelion (indeed, it is the song that epitomizes Evangelion). I still believe that the song is exceptionally well-composed and executed, nonetheless.

I'm split 50-50 between this issue so I would just call it even. It's "all right" to have it as a criteria, but I would hope that there is not as much emphasis on it as the quality of the song itself.
