If you guys are going to place screen shots in your reviews you should start now. Other wise the amount of reviews will be far too grate and it will be more work. I think that while someone checks and revises the reviews another one can implement the screenshots in the reviews.

The site needs more color and well images are a must if you want to make the site more attractive.

That's precisely what I was planning for. I had noted that we must put in the screenshots before we can add more to the database months ago.

Anyways, the problem here is: who will do it?

Group effort

Someone takes A-E, F-M, N-S, T-Z

and how many screenshots per review, and where to put them. I think 160x120 is a good size. maybe 120x90

I like 160x120.

I'll be willing to look up, resize, and add screenshots to the reviews.  I'll take A-M, or hell I could just do them all if that's easier.  What should the format be for the screenshots?  I sort of liked what we had set up before.  Simple, yet presentable.

My recommendation is that you guys place the screens (3 should be more than enough with out bandwidth problems) after The Highlights.

Lets be honest a lot of people don't read the entire review they just go for the summary, the score and the highlights, so if you place the screens after the highlights it will be perfect. And for the people that do read the entire thing, it won't be too far up or too far below the page this way you garantee everyone will get a glance at the screens.

Okay, thanks DT. We need a couple of screens on one or two reviews to see how it works out. Anyone willing to pump out three good screenshots for any title? I'll give you one or two days.

Here's what the screenshots "should" be like:
- a one pixel white border
- sharp and clear
- widescreen should have the black bars on the top and bottom

Check my FLCL review.

Edit-  Why the white border?  It looked good when we had a colored background, but now it doesn't seem to have a point.  Maybe if we had a black and white border, it would look a bit better.  Check the first screenshot and you'll see what I mean.  I left the other different so you could compare and make a choice.

Just a black border is > white and black. And if it was white you wouldn't be able to see it anyway.

Errrgh, yea black border was what I meant...

Just a black border is good enough.

And yes, that review looks very nice now!

So let's go for it!

PS: You guys realized that our graphics for the ratings have been thrown off because of some scripting conflict with the old editor and our new one? You gotta do a certain something to fix that:

Replace <^img.....^> with

<^img border="0" alt="X/10" src="http://www.nihonreview.com/images/rankX.png" ^/>

Where X is the rating. [The carrot tops are used to make the code appear on the forum in text. Remove them when actually applying the HTML]

Keep in mind that we will discard screenshots that we think "are bad." Quality is a priority. If you can't take screenshots, then please don't. (that's to everyone, not just you, Kuma)

Oh about the widescreen screenshots thing, you shouldn't do the black bar thingy anymore, (What you did for Appleseed is fine, there's no need to overwork) just take the screenshot as if you were taking a fullscreen screenshot and crop as so. That means, the screenshot should be the same resolution as fullscreen screenshots, but it just has the left and right sides chopped off. I read the topic in our channel and reasoned it out :)

All right, here's a list of titles that I can get screenshots for. I won't be able to do it until next week though, so if you beat me to it, then that's fine. What I don't want is for you to wait on me...that's not good, I'm not very reliable.

GITS
GITS 2*
Haibane Renmei
Midori no Hibi
Narutaru
Paranoia Agent
ROD TV
Kenshin: Tsuio*
Samurai Champloo
Escaflowne TV series*
Shingetsutan Tsukihime
Wolf's Rain

* Asterik titles are from DVD sources, so they are guaranteed to be top-notch.

I... err... keep everything I download.  I have a library of ~100+ DVD-Rs (and a share of proper DVDs, obviously, though it pales in comparison to my fansub collection), so I have quick access to screenshots I can take myself, as opposed to finding things on Google and image-sites.  I also have the anime folder in my 4chan directory which contains 640MB of images, all sorted by anime, with the odd screenshot here and there.  Give me time and a list of anime, and I could gather quality self-taken screenshots very quickly.

BY THE WAY:

You can take quick screen caps of the anime and send them along to me if you don't have the time. It should take 5-10 mins to screen cap a couple of them. The real annoying part is cropping (but that's easy, too...).

himura307@hotmail.com
or
tamashii@nihonreview.com

I suggest Hotmail, so that we don't rape our bandwidth. But the delivery is slow...so be warned.

This is a little off topic but it's too minor to start another thread:

If you notice that the grading graphics is all skewed (it's yellow, but instead of words, there are symbols), just go into HTML mode and remove all the size specifications aka Width Height Border etc.

I don't see the problem with the grading graphics.  So, either someone fixed it (which I'm not seeing as a possibility right now), or there is no problem.

All right, here's how it's going to break down:

We're going to use our Images direction in the public_html folder as oppose to your personal photobucket accounts. It's more reliable this way. In addition, please use the FTP manager tool that is provided in BlueHost to upload your images.

If you have screenshots in your photobucket, just leave it there.

Since it's all going into one big direction, it is ESSENTIAL that you label your screenshots in the following EXACT fashion: (screenshots that are already in there are exempt from this rule)

[GENRE][NAME][NUMBER]
For example:
AnimeMaihime01

Please capitalize correctly and use INITIALS when necessary! That means, if the title is long, shorten it! Midori no Hibi? MnH! Now and Then, here and there? NTHT! Got it?!

The system is EXTREMELY case-sensitive, even if your capitalization is off for your ".jpg," Wordpress will not read the file. Therefore, when you add your image tags into the reviews, make sure you do it EXACTLY right! I use a cheap copy + paste method so I get through everything quickly.

Sorrow-kun:
I don't like any of your Speed Grapher screenshots. :(
So sorry, but I'm not uploading them.

EDIT:

The following reviews have screenshots (thanks a bunch, SK)
- Mai-Hime
- Midori no Hibi
- ROD TV
- School Rumble
- To Heart
- Tsukihime

I didn't like them either, but considering how bad the animation in that series is, finding good screenshots is tough.  Oh well, back to the drawing board.

No random black bars on top of or under the images.

Good.

Bad.

Also, 1px black border ftw.

Do not host images on shit sites like imageshack and photobucket. All images will be uploaded to our server. Just email us pixx.

Well, Pheld, they don't have to worry about the black bars. When you screenshot a widescreen anime, you don't get blackbars if you do it properly (i.e. through BSplayer). Even if you use Print Screen on your keyboard, paste it in Photoshop, and save it, it's still fine. I do all the cropping. One thing I would like to note is that one should not take widescreen shots that are difficult to crop, example: an object/face that covers the 2.31:1 ratio...cropping it would mean losing an eye, both ears, or something else significant.

EDIT:

Thanks, Kuma. I removed the titles that you gave me screenshots for. You should have gotten another batch for Project A-ko, though. :(

Ok, you guys might want to considere this WordPress plugin:
http://wp-plugins.net/index.php?filter=ImageManager&filter_search=Go...

This little baby will let your staff upload pictures directly into the host 1 at a time. That way each reviewer is rsponsible of its own screenshots, taking a lot of work from the Admin's shoulders.

I dunno how the system works here, but I can tell you how I make it work in MR. In MR, everyone can edit pages, everyone (of the staff) can upload images (thanks to this plug in) and everyone can update the site. Sure, it requieres to give a lot of your staff extra power, but it pays off. As an admin you don't have to be chekcing every single damn thing to keep your site fuctional. That is the beauty of WordPress, as an admin you don't have to do much to keep the site functional, but all thoselittle details like screenshots or editing or updating are quite stupid for an admin to be doing those. My solution, I let my staff do it themselves.

It is based on a very simple code of honor:
1) Do not mess with others peoples reviews, cause you don't want them to mess with yours. The only thing you are allowed to change/edit in other peoples reviews are spelling and grammatical mistakes.
2) Take responsability of your own work. Just because you can now upload/update whatever you want when ever you want doesn't mean that you will. This site is a serious one. So take it seriously.
3) Admins still answer all the important calls. And they have ultimate power over it. If they disagree with the content you submited, they are entitled to do what ever they want with it. Why? Simple. All reviews submited become a part of the site. And as admin you are responsable for such content.
4) As long as everyone understands the food chain, there should be no problems. (And there aren't).

Seriously, as admins of NhRv you gusy still do way too much work than what you should do. And that plug in plus the SpellChecker, plus Role Manager, will make all your lives and work more easy.

ImageManager Homepage: http://soderlind.no/ImageManager
Role Manager Homepage: http://redalt.com/wiki/Role+Manager (changes permissions of each user level, it even creates new user levels and new permissions, easily)
Spellchecker Homepage: http://www.coldforged.org/spelling-checker-plugin-for-wordpress/ (While it is not fully functional with WP 2.0 [it won't replace the words when you click Replace] it can point out the mistakes you have made and you can add words to your own word library).

Seriously, start simplifying your jobs as admins. You don't see the CEO of FM or Ford make giving the last coat of paint in the assembly line right? Thats because he has people that can do that for him, as long as he provides them the tools.

All right.

Let's rehash.

- Escaflowne TV
- Escaflowne Movie
- Cardcaptor Sakura movies (both)
- Galaxy Express
- Ghost in the Shell movie 2nd batch
- Gunslinger Girl
- Haibane Renmei, 2nd set
- He Is My Master
- Hi no Tori
- Infinite Ryvius
- Kakurenbo
- Kurau
- Lupin 0 Contact
- Lupin Stolen
- Millenium Actress
- Totoro
- Narutaru
- Princess Mononoke
- All Project A-kos
- Utena
- Rumic Theatre
- Rune Soldier
- RK: Tsuiokuhen
- Samurai 7
- Samurai Champloo
- Silent Mobius
- Slayers NEXT
- Slayers Premium
- Spirit of Wonder
- Spirited Away

I'll be working on them as the week grows on. I should be finished Sunday. Give me a heads up if you want to share the work. :)

I sent you screens for some of those a long time ago, Tama.  Were they bad screenshots?

Thanks a lot COMPLEX.  We can't use all of them, but there's a lot of useful stuff there... so I'll see if I can get them sorted.

Yeah, crap. I've forgot about those...

I'll fetch up Kuma's and put it up.

EDIT: I only got 2 Silent Mobius screens from you, so I'll need some more. Two good screenshots will do.

EDIT2: The rest of your shots are up. Kudos!

SK, sorry about your batch--I chose Kuma's because he did his first...and because it's been idle for two months :(

I will, however, work on the other screens of your batch later tonight. Thank you!

I'm done with SK's batch.

Technically, we still need:

- Cardcaptor Sakura movies (both)
- Ghost in the Shell movie 2nd batch
- Hi no Tori
- Infinite Ryvius
- Kakurenbo
- Kurau
- Lupin 0 Contact
- Lupin Stolen
- One Project A-ko and the OVA
- Rumic Theatre
- RK: Tsuiokuhen
- Samurai 7
- Spirit of Wonder
- Spirited Away

I will get working on COMPLEX's pile tomorrow ( Mononoke, Champloo, Actress, GITS)

COMPLEX's screens are up, and I have to admit, his screens were great. I especially love the GITS and Champloo screens. Of course, I did some tweaking with all the screens I crop, but it's only a matter of adjusting the brightness, contrast, sharpness, and crop. It's up to the user, not the editor, to find the right screens.

C'mon guys, only about a dozen more to go! I know one of you have the above listed anime...spend a few minutes and Print Screen some of them for us!

Most of these screenshots are from anime best, so their image quality and sizes change from series to series. Hope that helps a bit in your quest for colorful reviews. I also took more than three screenshots for most of the shows to give a little variety.

Wow, thank you so much! I can use almost all of them. The only issues that I have with them are the shots of GITS2 and Project Ako. The former being too limited of a reflection of the movie (only the first screen has some significance), and the latter being too difficult to work with (varying quality, varying sizes). It would be great if you could provide new batches for them (we don't need another batch for GITS2 actually), but never feel pressured to do so. What you've contributed is more than enough. Thanks!

ps: they'll go up asap. I'm very busy for the next two weeks. You'll have to be patient. :(

Glad to be of service. So you're only needing the Project A-Ko screenshots then?

I made a little search and here are a few sites that have Project A-Ko screenshots (remember that this is an 'old' anime and that most of these sites haven't being updated since the change of millenium)

http://www.zuhlcity.com/a-kopix5.htm

(scroll down to find them. Sunglasses could prove to be useful for the task)

http://www.gravitoncity.com/gallery/ako3
http://www.gravitoncity.com/gallery/ako4
http://www.gravitoncity.com/gallery/ako5
(Each one of these galleries contains several other mini-galleries, so if you don't find something useful in any of those I really don't know where you could). Hope that helps. :p

The screenshots are all in, except for the following because I had never received any:

- Cardcaptor Sakura movies (both)
- Infinite Ryvius
- Kakurenbo
- Lupin 0 Contact
- Lupin Stolen
- Rumic Theatre
- RK: Tsuiokuhen

I can only do RK:Tsuio. We still need the rest!

I was just trying to help, instead of promoting 'stealing screenshots' and what not (that's why I added comments next some of the links saying where they were from). Links have been removed to avoid future problems.

I can't take screenshots directly from other review sites. Screenshots should be screenshots that were personally taken. Unless we are completely desperate, then we would resort to Googling some, but please becareful as to where you are "stealing" them from. Animefringe? Central Park Media? Other review sites? These are well-known sites and to blatantly rip them off in such a fashion would be dishonorable. Sites that have galleries (such as one of those links and the Project A-ko links) are ok, as long as only a few are taken, and only with good reason (generally, galleries acknowledge the fact that their pictures will snatched). All of the listed anime are common (except for maybe Lupin), so I do not know why no one can take a few screenshots from their avi files or dvd's. If I really wanted googled pictures, I would have done it myself.

We desperately want to finish this up, so much would be appreciated if screenshots for the listed anime are provided.
