UQ Holder (Mahou Sensei Negima 2)

Boy, I was joking when I said this was Ken Akamatsu not wanting to actually stop doing Negima, but that was because I'd never read the manga and knew jack shit about it except that Evangeline was still in it.  No, this is actually a direct sequel, set 70 years or so in the future.  We even get to start out by seeing the old Negima cast while Evangeline monologues us into the new setting.  Also, get ready to buy them Blu-Rays, because COVER CHAMO IS ALL OVER THE ****ING PLACE!  Then again, I didn't realize how much, or forgot, how much Akamatsu loves his fanservice.  The only manga of his I've actually read is Love Hina, and I don't remember that actually showing Naru's ample ronin boobies.  Sure, everybody got the fanservice treatment, including the kids, but it never went that far.  Just titilating naughty bits, panties, lots of girls in towels... lots of towels, sometimes leaves, and so on and so forth.  That first bit of the episode was easily more skin than I've seen in an Akamatsu anime or manga.

I would normally say "I hope it holds up!"... but cover Chamo is everywhere.

Anyway... as if you needed more help knowing this is a Negima sequel, for some ****ing reason the intro song for this is Happy Material.  Yes, the same Happy Material that intro'd both the first Negima and was an insert song for the second Negima!? series.  I think the song is cute and fine and all, and while I love that Database continued to intro Log Horizon into two seasons, I think three anime is pushing the boundaries of what is acceptable for song usage.  Meh.

In any event, it is a Ken Akamatsu anime, which means you can expect a bevy of cute girls and probably a lot of main male characters getting punched.  This first episode is a lot more violent and dark than the usual Akamatsu fare, so we'll see where this one goes.  Seems he was done doing the happy go lucky harem and wants to do the more rugged one, or maybe he just wanted to draw Evangeline grown up with a huge rack and body physics that wont quit.  I don't care either way.

Heh, they're teasing us with the gender of Kuromaru aren't they?  I mean, all the tropes are played out exactly as they should with the "he or she" nonsense, to the point where even Evangeline is now unsure and curious.  By the end, it seems they got so damned confused that they decided to take matters into their own hands and sneak a peak.  Whether they did or not is left to the audience, because if they know, they're going to be cheeky ****s about it and not tell us.

Got a nice ass on him regardless.  That thing was made for twerking.

I gave the first 2 episodes a try. Love Hina was enjoyable trash, but I never got into Negima. I thought maybe it's a fresh start, someone who hasn't followed Negima might find it a good starting point. Ywah, nah. I spent a bit of time on the wikia, and I'm guessing that if you aren't up to date on the Negima uni...multiverse? (never quite got that bit) then good luck trying to follow this. I was lost from the get go, there were things that I assume are call backs to one of the Negima's, but these 2 episodes didn't make me care enough to remain invested. Oh, I did get that the kid totally doesn't want to bone Yukihime *wink*.

Overall it felt like more generic shounen action to me. I'm out of this one.

I'll give it this, it is certainly different from Akamatsu's typical works.  I mean, nekkid girls is one thing, but having them get stabbed, shot through the mouth, arms chopped off, various other goreish things, is a little dark for him.

What?  I don't like this, but it is stupid entertaining in the creativity of violence.

Never mind.  It's the "we're going to allow ourselves to get beaten up and tortured for no reason because we're actually secretly so badass you had no prayer of winning in the first place" bullshit.  Boring.

I'll give him credit where it is due:  Ken Akamatsu is a creative guy who isn't afraid to **** around with his characters and doesn't seem to give a shit if that bugs his audience at all.  Unlike other writers who have resorted to pandering both out of necessity and fear of the otaku's whimsical and obnoxious behaviors, he doesn't seem to give a ****.  If he wants to turn one of his female characters suddenly into a slut, just to piss off purity fags, I don't doubt he'd do it.  That's not what happened here, but he still will do things that other writers don't dare do is the point.

Unfortunately, UQ Holder is starting to become a bit of a hot mess.  He has done a good job of incorporating the Negima stuff into this one, giving the fans a little service but also weaving together some plot points that went unresolved before.  The thing is, while I don't feel like reading all of Negima is necessary, it sure might help with some of this shit.  Love Hina, too, for a couple of small reasons.  Those aren't the reasons it is turning clumsy, that's all on Akamatsu throwing way too many concepts into this blender project of his and pissing caution into the wind while doing it.  To just describe Tota right now would take a small vocabulary arsenal from the Rikka Takanashi Book of Chuuniism, though thankfully without a lot of "edge" (which is weird seeing as how limbs get severed almost every episode).

Worse, he is slipping into the pitfalls of Negima by having a cast that is way too large for his creativity to focus on.  Negima had 30 girls in one classroom.  Name five of them.  I can't.  I read / saw Negima and don't remember jack about them.  I can remember Evangeline A.K. McDowell partially thanks to this (but I could anyway).  I can remember Asuna.  I can remember Chachamaru.  Uh.... that one girl with the thing.  That's the problem, they're not memorable characters because they have zero depth / dimension.  At least with Love Hina, he tried to give Naru and Shinbou and Motoko some character, though the other girls kind of got wasted (literally in Kitsune's case).  What he DOES do well, though, is develop a main male character.  Keitaro starts out a complete loser but evolves over time to be interesting, adventurous, and kind of a dorky manly guy in a weird way.  Negi Springfield starts out a child and ends up a man of sorts.  Konoe Tota appears to be heading towards some mega developments as well, assuming the series lasts long enough to get there.

This has turned into an incoherent mess, and the way they're doing this screams "we're not getting a second cour of this".
