We'd like to hear your opinions on our new screenshots format. In fact, we'd really prefer it if you guys decide.

Here is what it will be currently (100kb file, open in new window, please):
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b283/psychedelicrose/Screenshots.jpg

There will be 4 screenshots lined up in a row, each at 120x90 pixels. WxH.

I decided this on my own (Pheld decided the size) and I'd like to know what you guys think. Good? Bad? Can do better?

Concerns:

1. Comments. Writing in comments under screenshots is great...but if the caps are in a row, 4 at once, it becomes a little lame seeing a different comment for each screenshot. It loses the effect, as opposed to just one screenshot, isolated somewhere on top, with one funny comment.

2. Positioning. I want one screenshot in the upper right hand corner, where the review feels very empty, and the other 4 screenshots above the rating. Maybe that's a bad idea, and if we were going to go for it, I'd say that we only use 3 screenshots at the bottom. I don't know, the highlights feel so...awkward. I think that we should box the highlights and try to center it.

Comments are over-rated. And sometimes wit is not quite the writter's Fort Knox. I like the placing in the screen shot.

But screens scattered through out the text make the reading a bit easier, more fun and more dynamic. I also like the idea of having the screens above the rating, but we all know people only look at the pretty pics and the grades, so maybe if you have it in separate places a few more people than the average will actually read what you just said.

I was thinking about scattering it, too, but some people said it was "distracting".

/me shrugs.

I say....good job.

Don't change anything, and get cropping.

No comments under the screenshots.  It is cheesy, not to mention it rips off AA; something you have been trying to avoid at all costs.  I like the idea of spreading them throughout the review, but I can't think of any practical way to do it.  As for the highlights, maybe if we centered them instead of aligning them left.

I like the placement of the screens and your suggestion that three go on the bottom and one in the upper right, it'll give the reviews a "fullness" to them.

So comments are gone? I don't mind. Sorrow-kun might, though... What do you think?

The highlights will NOT be centered. I know what it looks like centered and it looks terrible. The reason is that some highlights are very long and others are one word, so it would look like:

THE. HIGH. LIGHTS.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONGGGG
Short.
Too short.
TOOOOOOO LONNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGG

I want to "box it", meaning to trap inside an invisible table, and then center it. It's basically a "tab" to the Highlights, but with some boundaries set so that there is a limit to how many characters each line has and when that limit is broken, a new line is started.

I have opinions.  I'll post them first thing when I get home.

Edit:  Ok, finally got a chance to post something.  As far as the images are concerned, I think it's a tad boring just to have them across the top like that.  But, I've seen a couple of sites around that intersperse their images within the text, and I don't think it works too badly.  It generally works quite well in books and whatnot.  So, I don't really see why it couldn't work on a website.

Here's my suggestion.  Be critical:  http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/7413/format24nk.jpg

I put something similar up a few months ago, but no one saw it because imageshack was being stupid for some reason.  Anyway, I did this in Paint (which is stupid), but the main idea is just to use images to fill the big holes, and to break up the review around the middle.

Also, as far as captioning images and things are concerned, how about we just let reviewers put captions on as many pics as they want?

I think it will work if the review is full enough, if it's a small review its going to make it look weird.

Maybe put the images more to the left?, or maybe put more than one image at those points?

In respect of captions, reviewers should put captions on them if they want, BUT they should be given a list of OVERUSED jokes/puns/phrases that should NOT be used underneath a picture. If I see a caffiene joke anywhere in this site, i will throttle the reviewer responsible.

I do not like your format. Reasons:

1. If anything, it would be distracting. I don't like it when I read a paragraph and move onto the next, just to find that an image or some advertisement is scrolling along. My eyes usually skip over them. So if I'm reading a very good review, who I rather A. Keep on reading or B. Look at screencaps? This same argument can be said for screenshots dispersed and embedded in the reviews, but your format is much more offensive because it puts focus onto the screenshots.

2. Like darylcrowe said, it would make small reviews look slightly awkward. Also, not everyone uses a 4 paragraph format. Sometimes I see 7, 8, or even three paragraphs. How can we even space out the screenshots between paragraphs to make it look pleasing and not unorganized?

--

The dispersal of screenshots throughout the review, yet imebbed within it (such was show-cased by my Angel's Egg review a very long time ago) seems like something everyone likes. If no one opposes, I think we should go with that. Sure, it'll take a little bit of effort on the admin/editor's hands, but all it really is is Copy, Paste, and Change the values.

I don't like giving reviewer a choice of how many screenshots to caption. It'll cause unbalance when the caps are put in a row. I still do not like it even if we use dispersed + embedded. All the screenshots must have a caption if we're going to go with captions.

Which is exactly why I vote "no captions."

If you're up to the challenge of embedding screenshots in the reviews, go for it.

not to mention it rips off AA

Which must have ripped off thousands of other sources. AA most certainly did not come up with the caption idea.

Anyway, I like the picture captions. Someone was talking about some reviewers not being witty and whatnot, but not all captions have to be.

I like Sorrow-kun's thingy. Though, instead of breaking the paragraph, the words should just wrap around the picture. Like this http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v644/Panzyo2588/FMA.jpg

And yeah, that's what I say you guys should do.

Later.

That's what we meant by "dispersed, but embedded".

So "dispersed and embedded" it is. I'm going to have Bravotwo help us out on this one, just for the base code, and then it will be copy and paste all the way. Hopefully this can start by next week--I need to pay my debts to him first!
