I'm surprised it even got on. Has an anime film based on a TV show ever got an Oscar nomination? I know original anime films have of course.

Please post a source in the OP.

As far as I understand, this means it's been submitted for a nomination... it doesn't actually have one yet.  The Wind Rises is a much better chance of getting an actual nomination.  Anime rarely fares well at the Oscars.  I doubt Madoka 3 will get in.

We've known this for about a month now.

Even among anime films Rebellion's probably the least likely to get a nomination. Of the other two films it's against in that regard, one is Miyazaki's swan song and the other is a relatively safe and technically excellent Totoro-lite that's already been established a bit, both of which have the advantage of hitting wider, less insular audiences.

I skimmed through the third Madoka movie, I frankly don't think it deserves one.

You mean the movie which Gen is obviously embarassed about because he said it's not to be taken as the ending to the TV series but rather a "what if" story. I'm pretty sure he was forced to write it, and then he was forced to change the ending because of someone else. Giving us the rather absurd and obvious sequel fodder conclusion it gave.

But yeah, that's pretty odd regardless that it was even nominated.

Sequel fodder? I actually did think this served as a fitting conclusion to the whole series, as it took the characters development into fascinating territory. As for the end, one day god will wake up, the devil will be an enemy, and they'll have to fight. That sounds more like a distant Ragnarok-type event than a sequel hook.

Well the thing is...the original madoka series was already about a "ragnarok" type of event. Plus the ending was very similar to the ending of the TV series but used role reversal (in every literal sense). Just seems like they took a tightly knit story and are milking it for all it's worth. But if this in fact the "ending" without any extras then I can dig it. I just feel like they made this so they could have a sequel series for some reason.

I'm not even sure why the first 2 movies were necessary as the original series already had good animation and was paced very well (and most of all, was short). Just seemed kind of pointless (plus they had to abridge the story in the first movie, making the plot seem less tight).
