Joshiraku
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:23:16 PM »
Late entry in the season due to no streams and really difficult to sub.

It's a comedy series where 5 girls more or less just spend the entire time talking, in a single room.  However, it's from the deranged mind of the creator of Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei.  You can imagine where this is going.

First episode was quite funny.  Solid subs on the first one, but some stuff is still lost in translation.  But, it was funny.  I hope it can keep it up.

Okay, that was unconventional.

But it's quite obvious from the onset: this show isn't for everyone. People who love Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei are gonna love this too. People who don't, maybe they won't. 'Fraid to say that I belong to the latter; not to say that the show isn't good but it's just something that I can't get into. Sure love the last gag with the girls yelling to Japan's neighbors, but like I said, this show is niche and is not meant for everyone.

But I'll stick around, anyway. I can imagine how some people are gonna rave about it.

I can see why this was ****ing difficult to sub...

I was slightly hesitant at watching this at first, but I think J.C. Staff managed to deliver this time - this felt like a fresh breath of air from the other 'cute girls doing talking about cute things' anime. Oh man, that last gag...

This was one of the most solid first episodes of the season imo, although just like SZS, the series' enjoyment value is heavily dependent on the audience and especially prone to comical decay if it tries to run for too long. Nevertheless, it was an impressive start, and I'll stick to it closely for now.

Edit: Oh boy, is this going to troll the Koreans inform us about the infamous electric fan death bullshit in the upcoming episode? Being a Korean myself, I guess I'm in for a treat...

I had to go look up that "electric fan death".  That's pretty hilarious, actually.

Oh crap... I think I enjoyed that far more than I should have.  Hat's off to [gg] for braving that storm.  I don't normally care for localizations, but when it comes to god awful Japanese puns, it is almost a requirement.  I think I was more smiling than laughing, much like with Binbougami, until that last joke.  That's one of those universal jokes.  Seems to be shooting for more sophistication than low brow, so it'll be worth keeping up with.

Christians now have the power to know who has money.  I never knew! :) (That was a really funny bit)  Or, a better question, the Japanese apparently have as many problems with the Jehovah's Witnesses as the rest of us do, then?

This is both a really funny & weird series, plus an amazing take on the "Cute girls do cute things" genre.  It's pretty much a deconstruction, at this point.

I too laughed at the evangelist getting thumped.  Not like I've wanted to do that or anything.......(salespeople too.  No, I'm not interested, go away)

This is an increasingly absurd show, and I love it.  Though I expect Kukuru will be out of the psych ward next week, I would love it if they mentioned it.  Love the ED as well.

I don't know who is scarier: Kukuru or Kigurumi.

So... who the hell was that chick with the Lucha Libre mask?

Once again, I think I only laughed a few times (religious zealots, McDonalds WITHOUT COUPONS [!!!!.. GASP *da daa DA dah daaaah*], Dr. Zhivago, Dr. No, Dr. Moreau, all real, Dr. Blackjack is fake, if they'd have dropped a House reference I'd have lost my shit) but I was still highly entertained regardless.  It must be hard ass work subbing this series, and a lot of the jokes, even with [gg]'s attempt at localization, don't help as much as they'd probably like.  Watching them segue from topic to topic with nary a breather is also enjoyable, but not as much as when they ultimately bring the thing back around to the first topic.

And that end is boss.

This episode highlighted one of my pet peeves with the Japanese language: it can't make up its mind on its readings. Especially names of places. Always nerve-wracking to know which places use their sound or native-reading for the first time. Also, it certain brings back memories for me to see Asakusa's Kaminarimon... and that Asahi tadpole-like symbol..

Another place that brought back memories: Odaiba. Surprisingly, the place bored me: it reminded me too much of my own country Singapore so I felt like I was simply back home rather than enjoying an authentic Japanese setting.

And you know what, it's sad that the moon looks small from where I am. Kinda wonder how big it is if seen from other countries that are way higher in the north.

Well, it actually looks about the same size no matter where you are on Earth.

Funniest episode so far. The whole gag on public servants and Venusian Hatoyama was hilarious.

Sadly, too much of this one went over my head.  Bless [gg] for attempting to make the jokes work, but sometimes they just can't pull it off.  Joshiraku might be worse than Zetsubou Sensei when it comes to the culturalisms, and while I'm enjoying the hell out of it, I'm still lost far too often.
