11 Eyes

Well, that was interesting.  The cute moe was used as a disarming feature to the intensity of the scenes in the "Red Sky world".  We've seen this before.  Sorrow-kun wrote a great piece about how Higurashi was moe's greatest achievement.  I'm not really sure what we have here yet, but this seems to be in a similar vein.  Cute bishoujou and panty flashes giving way to what seems to be a rather terrible situation.  In anime like this, naturally the characters will develop some powers that allow them to survive in the "red sky world", but for now, their uncertain fate is very real, at least for them.  And the director did a decent enough job of creating a tense moment.

He actually could have done better than he did, but for a first episode of an anime I have no knowledge of and, thus, no expectations, I'm okay with it for now.  We'll see how this goes.  As refreshing as it would be to have them just be regular people in a weird situation, I'm not an idiot.  We'll eventually get to see mass wholesale slaughter of these slug, winged, tentacle, things soon enough.  For now, I'm enjoying the horror.

Y'know, there's just enough here to keep me interested.  They resisted giving everybody uber powers in the second episode, though we had at least one character show up and two others who became known.  I'm not really sure how to take this yet.  Is this supposed to be in the fantasy genre or more geared towards the suspense / horror genre?  I guess I wont know until someone finally gets hit by one of the "enemies".  If it results in a rather painful and bloody injury or death, I'll have my answer.

For now, this is about 75% cool and about 25% "I could have done that better".  Like I said, there's just enough to keep it interesting.  However, I could see an idea like this expanded out in much greater detail.  Even though there are certain inevitabilities, it's still something to work with.  I'll keep you posted.

The animation sure took a dip though.  I guess I should have expected that.

Well, I am rather glad this isn't moving at a completely crazy pace.  Doesn't make much sense, but considering what we know, which is always seen from the point of view of the two "first" characters, I'm sort of fine with things for now.  Eventually someone's going to have to exlpain this.  I also hope we don't get bogged down in a "zomg powers!" type environment, where things just degrade into generic fighting anime.  Still, as far as that goes, it's one of the better ones so far.

Well, it took longer than I thought, but yes we've gotten past even worrying about the slug creatures and the gang's all here.  Now if we can figure out what the point of all this shit is, I might be happy.  For those of you who DIDN'T see Yuka turning batshit yandere, well, you need to watch more anime.  I had that pegged from the INTRO.

Though we'd better start seeing some stuff soon, because we're running out of bad guys.  I'm relatively sure the "tweest" here is going to be that the "bad guys" are actually doing us all a favor, but "how" remains to be seen.  I don't really like needless twists like that, but I think it's been set up since the beginning.  The "Black Knights" have been rather aberrant about their tasks.  Normally bad guys are fairly obviously evil and / or psychotic, but these guys seem to be more on the "just doin' mah job" vein of things.  Though at least one character has developed a personal vendetta due to the confrontations.

One thing is for sure, this is a decent show.  No, it isn't great.  Yes, it would be better as porn (what wouldn't?).  But it has enough stuff to feed on until the end.

Well, Shiori finally explained it, and now we (and the featured characters -- aka the fragments) know what the life or death struggle is about, and that the fragments are the bad guys. But maybe not.

Too bad Shiori wasn't a key character in the earlier episodes, revealing, then actively dealing with her knowledge that she and the other fragments are bad guys (or maybe not). Much more drama there beyond the fight scenes which were not going to result in the death of Yuka or Kakeru (too much business left between those two). A dual focus on Kakeru and Shiori could have created some tension.

Is there a meme operating in the anime industry this year to take a series into the late episodes without revealing a reason for life & death battles, even one that's twisted later?
but I really was fascinated

Actually that's a staple of most shows like this.  Nothing is ever as cut and dry as it seems.

BTW, here comes the body count.  Actually, I saw this coming from three thousand kilometers away.
