Title: Favorite Mangakas?
Post by: DarkKanti on August 31, 2006, 11:01:13 PM
Who are some of your favorite mangakas and why?

Naoki Urasawa. Easily my favorite mangaka of all time. He's written such incredible works as Happy, Yawara, Monster, Pluto, and my personal favorite, 20th Century Boys. He has a special knack for creating both complex storylines and endearing characters.

Adachi Mitsuru. Simple and fun is the best way to describe reading any Adachi manga. Such manga include Touch, Katsu, Cross Game, Rough, and my favorite H2. Adachi specializes in sports manga, but the real gem in all of his works is the characters he creates and the relationships between those characters.

Tsutomu Nihei. Nihei is without a doubt my favorite manga artist. While his stories are often times hard to follow and characters a bit lifeless, his amazingly detailed and rough artwork more than makes up for it. His works include Biomega, Blame!, Wolverine Snikt, and a 14 page chapter in the newly released Halo graphic novel.

Honorable Mentions
Kubo Tite: Bleach.  Zombie Powder.
Hiroki Endo: The Crow, The Girl, and The Yakuza.  For Those of Us Who Don't Believe in God.
Tohru Fujisawa: GTO.  Shounan Gumi.

Yoshiyuiki Sadamoto: Manga-ka of Neon Genesis Evangelion. His approach to the story after breaking away from Anno's direction adds a lot to an already good story. His artwork is never hard on the eyes. He is also known for the character design for Nadia.

Kio Shimoku: Genshiken's writer and artist. I enjoy his art style and nack for writing "geek humor".

Kiyohiko Azuma: Great comedy writer and character designer.  Azumanga Daioh ranks high on my "all-time favorite manga" list, and he is the man behind it.

Honorable Mentions:
Reiko Momochi: Confidential Confessions
Shin Takahashi: Saikano

Kurier gets -1,000,000,000,000 points for mentioning Shin Takahashi.

And everybody knows that Tsutomo Takahashi, Kentaro Miura, Kaori Yuki, Yukito Kishiro, Hiroki Endo, Naoki Urasawa and Goseki Kojima are my favorite mangakas. In order: Jiraishin, Blue Heaven; Berserk; Angel Sanctuary, Boy's Next Door; Battle Angel Alita; Eden, Crow, Girl Yakuza; Monster, 20th Century Boys; Samurai Executioner, Lone Wolf And Cub.

I don't read much manga, but I do have some favorites....:

-Hiromu Arakawa: Before I get a bunch of smart ass replies to this, all I have to say is that without her, there would be no "Fullmetal Alchemist". She can do artwork and tell a good story at the same time. And the FMA manga shows this.

-Kiyohiko Azuma: what Kurier said.

-Yuu Watase: Yes, "Absolute Boyfriend" is a tad odd (that's an understatement...>.><.<), but her artwork is amazing and "Alice the 19th"=goodness (has the artwork component and a story).

And Yuu Watase bishonen=win.  >:3

Takeuchi Naoko- Inventing Sailor Moon is reason enough.<3
Saito Chiho- I adore her imagery and style; it has sophistication. And I like that.
Yazawa Ai- Okay, my favourite. She represents everything I live by: fashion, anime, love, 'n par-tays, baby! I melt when I read her manga. Case closed.
Kiyohiko Azuma- what he said.
Yuu Watase- what she said.

I can't review it because I am waiting for the final volume Tama, I could preview it, but what would be the point in that if I am waiting for the last volume?

Stay on topic, stay on topic. I blame DT and Tama. Every thread goes off topic as soon as Tama replies.

Kubo Tite is another favourite of mine. <3 Bleach.

Hahaha, that's true Seven. Very true.

How's Bleach now-a-days? It's become "Naruto 2" yet?

So True...

@Tama- Yes it has.  It's also known as DBZ III...  says the guy who's reading both Bleach and Naruto.  >.>

I've just started reading Zombie Powder too, and I'm already sold on it. I'm looking forward to the next volume for it.

Favorite manga-kas, eh?  Hmmm....

Well, I've gotta say Naoki Urasawa.  I've only read four volumes of Monster, so maybe it's a tad premature... but those four volumes have been so gripping that it's easily the manga I anticipate the most.

Next, I guess would be the Riichiro Inagaki - Yusuke Murata duo.  Eyeshield 21 is pure sports comedy gold.

For shoujo, Kyoko Hikawa wins.  From Far Away is my favorite shoujo-fantasy manga ever, with strong characters, good fantasy elements, angst, and bishonen.

Fuyumi Soryo also needs to go in here.  Mars was enjoyable, but she's really hooked me with ES, which from what I've read is a promising series.

Matsuri Akino definitely has to go in here, for her manga Petshop of Horrors and Genju no Seiza.

And Hiroaki Samura too!  Who can't help but love Blade of the Immortal!

On zombie powder: If you have read 4 volumes, you can stop waiting, there are no more.

On Monster and Urasawa: You are actually a little bit too late. Usually people say that Urasawa rocks after volume 1 of any of his titles.

Well, I didn't want to jump the gun or anything.... -_-

As for Zombie Powder, I've only read one volume.  There are only four total?  Please tell me that it's a good, complete storyline.

Well, it's a good incomplete storyline.  :D

Sigh.

I guess a neatly wrapped up storyline was just too much to hope for.

My personal favorites:

Kozue Amano - ARIA series. Beautiful artwork, compelling characters, and the mystery of whether this person is male or female just adds up.

Kiyohiko Azuma - Azumanga was funny, but in Yotsubato, he realllly shows his drawing skills. I am impressed.

Naoko Takeuchi - The Sailormoon anime may be mediocre, but the manga shines gold.
Kia Asamiya - I'm a fangirl for Silent Mobius, what can I say?
Mazakazu Katsura - He doesn't get enough love these days. *sniff* Shadow Lady is one of my favourite manga of all time.
Kosuke Fujishima - Most amazingly consistant detailed artwork I know of.
Ai Yazawa - Stylized art for the win. She's amazing.
Usumaru Furuya - Very few things can make me laugh as much as Short Cuts did.

Osamu Tezuka. Because his art is so lively and expressive.

Seriously, where is the love for good ol' Tezuka??

Tezuka is good, but the idea of him being the "God of Manga" seems a bit overrated to me.

That said, I like Seo Kouji's stuff. Suzuka, Cross-Game, KimiMachi. Drawings as spectacular, even if the stories are a bit too generic shounen sometimes.
