Title: Bob's Burgers
Post by: DrIdiot on November 20, 2014, 03:23:23 AM
So... not anime, not even drawn like it, but is anyone watching Bob's Burgers?  I think this is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen, though parts of the first season was kinda weak.  But otherwise the writing is just really good.  The jokes are well worked into the situations.  The references are worked in well too: they use them sparingly but effectively.  Also, I think they reference things I've seen more than, say, Family Guy; for example: Trainspotting, Reservoir Dogs, Totoro! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5USniU_tgBs (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5USniU_tgBs)), .... I never really understood the references in Family Guy but I hear it's because I wasn't born in the 60s or something.  The characters are also great, they're complex, you really feel like they're real people (except Louise, who is way too precocious, but I give that a pass because either she or Linda is the most amusing character in the show).

I want to say this show is more earnest or something than previous incarnations of animated comedy.  This isn't hard to say if you're comparing to Family Guy but the Simpsons and Futurama used the sarcastic joke pretty often too, or made fun of someone/thing.  I guess its ambitions are humble -- its subject matter is the mundane.  Anyway I'm finding this  show really refreshing.

Also: (spoiler alert), in Futurama, Leela is "stranded" on an island with Zapp and sleeps with him.  In Bob's Burgers, Linda is "stranded" on an island with Kurt and headbutts him in the face.  F- yeah

Could never get into it.  I realize a lot of comedies and TV shows in general suck balls in their first seasons, and usually hit their stride once the actors get into their characters and the writers start to tweak out the stupid concepts and work in better ones, but I couldn't be bothered to have that kind of patience.  I may go back and watch it eventually.

Was hooked form the first episode. The show can really do werk with the mundane. It is no, not to mention vastly different from, Rick and Morty, but still an incredibly enjoyable animated comedy(see. they are totally comparable at a base level).
