Title: Explain your NHRV user name
Post by: Marid King on January 09, 2014, 08:39:15 PM
I'm curious. Here's mine:

A Marid is the most powerful class of commonly summoned demon in the magician-ruled London of The Bartimaeus Trilogy. One of the first questions Ptolemy, the demon-sympathetic prodigy, asks Bartimaeus upon summoning him, is whether or not the denizens of the Other Place have a King or leader.

Marid King.

But I've discovered that many people hallucinate an extra D and write 'Madrid King'.

Sure. I'm game.

My user name is simply my real name, but I took away every other letter. So for example David would look like DVD (And yes, that was completely unintentional). Care to guess my real name from this. It feels like a weird way to make one, but MCAL kind of just rolled off the tongue.

I want to be like Sorrow-kun

"Sorrows Neptune" was the name of some weird monster character I thought of when I was 11 (give or take a year), which I then decided to use as my username on certain websites once I started using the internet shortly afterward. "Neptune" because the creature was aquatic, and "Sorrows" because I thought being angsty was cool back then.

It has, I would like to think, aged better than most usernames created by 11 year olds, so its stuck with me ever since.

Why, so I can cringe at myself again? You want to share in that cringe?

As a teenager, I listened to way more Metallica than was healthy, so it used to be sorrowharvester.  Then I went into my weeaboo phase, so I changed it to Sorrow-kun.  I could have changed it years ago, but, well, why?  It's like throwing away an identity... an internet identity, sure, but, it's not that strange to become attached to the stupid things one does as a teenager.

TOP SECRET

TIF's explanation would be enlightening.

People always start off asking 'Do you know Othello? Desdemona?' and they're mistaken, but it's also amusing that people have asked what 'Desdemondia' means on Cha Cha, Wiki Answers, Asktastic.. etc. Always have been Des though, since my days of runescape, so for about 7 years now.

Post by: Delphinox on January 09, 2014, 09:50:41 PM
I have three possible explanations, and differentiating between any of them is like trying to figure out who Sophie's father is in Mamma Mia!

1) The most straightforward interpretation is that Delphi is the city in Greece where the Oracle is said to be located. Nox is the Latin suffix for night.

2) Along the same lines as #1, Delphi can also be directly taken out of Philadelphia; I’m an ex-resident of the area and a lifelong Eagles/Phillies fan. Nox is, again, the Latin suffix for night. So essentially, “Philly night.” This interpretation actually gives my username sort of a dark tone because you’re likely suicidal if you go out at night in select areas in Philly.

3) Portmanteau of Delphin (Greek dolphin god) and equinox (the March equinox being the day when spring starts). Dolphin god picked with the dolphin kick in mind, the kick you do while swimming butterfly. I contemplated Dolphinox as a username for slightly under a split-second before I realized how stupid that sounded.

Which explanation works the best for you? Looking back on it, I think I leaned most toward #3, but at the end of the day it just sounded nice and fit like a glove. I did half-assedly consider more animanga-related names (ex. Hitsuzen and Amirluk), but realized pretty quick I didn’t want to be attached to any one series for aesthetic purposes. Good thing too, as the first avy I used on here ended up being Triela.

I became so jaded and cynical towards fans that I created this monicker, the Typical Idiot Fan, to express my displeasure. I have had this name now for a very long time, and I will continue to have it so long as anime fans continue to be really ****ing stupid.

I will add, since it wasn't posted here yet, that the name wasn't in response to anime fans in particular being ****ing stupid, but actually professional wrestling fans.  I wrote for a, now defunct, review / rumor wrestling website a LONG time ago.  Had this name since then.

The first online multiplayer game I EVER played was Club Penguin.  It seriously took me 10 minutes to find a username that wasn't taken.  As I grew older,  I started using it for everything else I did on the internet.  Thus, Shadowpulse was born.  KDH is just my initials.

Still Quite Annoyed.

I was mostly away from watching new seasons, but when I got back in, Guilty Crown was at ep 11.  I loved the art and visuals, so started watching.  It started as "Quite Annoyed" after ep 13, then progressed from there.

I think I made this in like the 2nd or 3rd grade for an online game called ARC.  Back then I probably thought it was funny because doctors are not supposed to be idiots, but who really knows, because back then I also liked running around telling people that their boxers were on backwards.

I'm not particularly attached to it, but I just cbf to come up with another online handle I guess.  I went with my real first name on some forums in high school but later decided that was a bad idea.

Truth be told, I suck at making names. I try not to if I can help it, but I wanted to try something new with this and MAL anyway, so I was stumped.

So I just settled to name myself after a Jet Set Radio Future song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSZIej-ZraE)

My name...german word, lesss of a word more of a coined term. Hmmm around 2004ish when my friedns and I were in 8thish grade(12years old), we were hxc humanists. We were more absurdists than anything. We delved hard into the flaws of society and the faults of man. This led us to militant atheism and an almost anarchic sense of justice. That isnt to say morality is predicated upon the existence of teh Divine. Anywho, this thing called "Zeitgeist: The Movie" was released online. It highlighted the similarities between the basic believes of the Judeo-Chrsitian norm and Islam and ancient Egyptian Mythos and everything else...Anywho, again, "Zeitgeist" sounded cool and thus was absorbed into my being. And that's that.

Oh, side side note, all this b.s. is why I originally opposed SQA's cristicism of the early episodes of Shingeki. Suggesting that young boys couldnt blithe on about humanist philosophy and the current state of affairs. I lived that sh%t. But hey, what's cultural relevance.

P.P.P(?).S. I posted this in a slightly inebriated state. But look at my childhood! My social skills often fail me.

When I first joined AA (back in 2004...>_>), I figured that the name sakura would be taken (or something), and I watched a random episode of Monster Rancher and the main character's name was Genki (IIRC). I think that character said that his name meant happy or something.

TL;DR: literally means "happy/energetic cherry blossom" in Japanese. What can I say, I was 15 when I came up with it.

(Holy crap that was 10 years ago....)

I google 'Schlong'. I think it means pen*s. I think it schould be a 18+ years old block.

Anyway, when I was in collage, I always carry a Swiss Army Officer Knife in my bag. When my friends need some tools like a knife, sicssors, screw driver, I'm the guy they turn too. My house mates started to call me Doctor Gadget, after that famous police inspector, Inspector Gadget. (Not the movie.) So I started using 'Gadget' as an internet name, even in my email.

"... The famously genial grin turned into a rictus of senile fury: I was looking at a cruel and stupid lizard..."
-- Christopher Hitchens, on Reagan during his presidency.

I read Hitchens on the Reagan Administration when I was around eleven or twelve. I came across this quote and, having never read quite so apt and eloquent a description, decided that I needed a way to always remember it. My solution was to use a bastardized spelling of "senile" as my MAL username; I used MAL quite a bit in that time and frequented its forums. After this I began using this bastardized spelling, CNile, as my username whenever possible.

I became obsessed with cynical Internet critics during college and as a result, grew to love picking apart things I liked (didn't get into picking apart things I didn't like until much later), hence the name. I used to go under Flawnalyst (combination of Flaw and Analyst), but the name was hard to pronounce and looked stupid, so I changed it during the weeks when I picked Guilty Crown apart. The Mr. was added so that if I ever get accused of being a troll, at least I'd be a professional-sounding one.

Well when you change you're mind, just knock on this moderator's door.

I suppose though I should explain my own. The name Kavik Ryx comes from my more Gundam obsessed days when I thought up what would be an awesome name for a Char clone, something which sounded both sinister yet mysterious. The name is also coincidentally the name of a remote place in Alaska, which is about as far from humanity that I sometimes desire to be.

I'm an aspiring piano composer and arranger (arranging mostly anime and movie soundtracks; anipiano, if you're familiar with it), but I have yet to become as skilled as others in my field. When I graduated highschool, I had to record some of my works for a senior project. Unfortunately, the recording material was broken, so I 'presented' the crud on youtube as a Sidenote, while performing my main work at a concert.
