Free Bird

Now that new season has come to a close it’s time to look back at the titles that came in with potential and has fully blossomed into its final form.  First up is Free! which was much maligned for betraying the loyal Kyoto Animation enthusiasts but has proven to be more of the same so long as you’re into guys.  Next up is a weird art house-y anime with an extremely mainstream name: Gatchaman Crowds.  If you’re expecting a spiritual reboot of the beloved Gatchaman, this is not the series for you.

I was watching The Idolm@ster 5th Live: The World Is All One (day 2) with some guys the other day and I cracked the joke when Aoi Tori came on. The set is basically Asami Imai soloing the song with a backup dancer doing interpretative dancing, with some kind of fabric tied to her wrist to mimic the wings of a bird. At the end of the song the dancer got behind Imai and lined up for a shot where her arms would extend outward and show it as wings on Imai’s back.

It’s at that moment I went “BIIIIRD GO.” It only works because Aoi Tori is this solemn affair. Since it’s a few guys just cracking jokes we went through the usual Free Bird-related jokes throughout the song.

Darn it. Can’t unsee that “Bird Go” motion. I’m going to have to make it a drinking game one of these days.
