The Nihon Review - Anime Reviews & Editorials

To the box-office ahoy!

What does one do with a TV franchise that has proven itself to be highly popular? One milks it for all it is worth by turning it into a movie, of course! Though the limitations of the movie format usually means that creative adjustments tend to be inevitable, such is probably the last thing on anyone’s mind considering how franchise fans would be all too willing to lap up any second helpings of their favourite tales.

Unfortunately, when it comes to critical reviews, these movie adaptations tend to suffer in comparison to their TV counterparts due to several advantages that the latter format usually enjoys, and today brings us no less than 2 such cases. AC kicks reason to the curb once again with Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann: Gurren-hen, while Sorrow-kun revisits the realm of tears once again with Clannad – The Motion Picture.
