The Nihon Review - Anime Reviews & Editorials

The Past and the Present

Two new reviews for you folks today! First up is perhaps the oldest anime yet to be reviewed here: Kaikyaku takes a look at Hakujaden, which looks at an ancient Chinese tale through a Disney-inspired lens. The actual movie is rough, but it’s important as a piece of animated history, because it’s the first anime movie to be produced in color, to be shown in North America, and inspired a young Miyazaki Hayao. In the present, we have The Second Combustion, the middle part of the Mardock Scramble trilogy. AC likes that the visuals have been bumped up a bit and that the supporting cast gets more focus than the first movie — and he hopes the finale will deliver an explosive end.
