The Nihon Review - Anime Reviews & Editorials

Thank you to everyone

Today I am making the sad announcement that I have resigned from The Nihon Review, effective immediately. This has been brewing for a while, and I informed the rest of the staff internally a few months ago now. I have just finished my PhD (finally) and my life is undergoing a number of hectic changes. Throughout the past year I have found that I do not have the same passion for writing about anime that I once did, and found myself less inclined to dedicate my increasingly sparse spare time to the hobby that previously I loved.

When I first joined The Nihon Review in late 2005, we were a fledgling anime review site still in search for direction, lucky when we received 300 visitors a month. We now get more than 100 times as much traffic and have a vast database of reviews in a number of sections. We’ve come a long way in that time, and brought together a group of talented, knowledgeable and reliable reviewers, but at the same time I feel like there’s so much more I could have done to make this place better, which I either couldn’t or didn’t do. I have left this site to a new leadership team, headed by Kylaran and supported by Shinmaru, who I trust will make the right decisions to help this site be the best it possibly can into the future. I am happy to provide support and advise if they ask me, but the site is effectively theirs, to take where they see fit, and I claim no ownership over it except for the words that I wrote myself.

I wish to thank all the amazing people who helped this site during my time here. Everyone who’s ever written for The Nihon Review, I consider a friend. I want to give a special thanks to a few people who inspired and helped me over the years, or have gone above and beyond the call of duty for this site, because they shared my vision and believed in us. Thank you to Seven and Tamashii for accepting me here to begin with, for giving me a place to share my voice. To dheu, whose leadership and support during the fledgling days of this site did so much to define what we would become. To TypicalIdiotFan, your aggressive confidence and insistence that anime could be something more than mindless entertainment was an inspiration to me, way back in the days where the Anime Academy forums were our shared stomping ground. To Shadowmage, who has been with us for so long, and continues to serve as one of our most consistent and talented review writers. To Kavik Ryx, who gave this site a voice it didn’t have previously, you succeeded at every role we asked of you. To zzeroparticle, for his passion for anime music, his unyielding insistence that something most people see as a niche interest actually matters and deserves attention and, most importantly, for being such a good friend to me over the years. To Akira, you are a bro; a magnetic personality who instantly grabs the attention of all around him, strong, confrontational, opinionated but always considered in your thought. Just being able to call you a friend fills me with so much pride. To AC, for his unyielding loyalty; you have always given more to this site than we have ever asked. To Kylaran and Shinmaru, I know first hand that the task I have given you will be a challenging one, but you are capable, intelligent people who I have full confidence in, and I know that you’ll be able to make this site a better place than I left it.

And finally, I would like to thank all our readers, without whom this site would be nothing. A place like this lives and dies on its community, and the people who make up that community are everything. I hope all of you continue to support The Nihon Review, as I am sure that the staff members who remain will do their utmost to make The Nihon Review a place worth supporting. Thank you again.

I don’t want to close the door on coming back, because who are we to know what the future holds, but if I do, it won’t be for a very long time. Right now, in my current state of mind, I don’t think I can muster the energy to make a consistent contribution to this site, so staying on would, in my mind, be unfair to everyone who would rely on me to do so. So, for now, this is my final contribution to The Nihon Review: two new anime reviews, Fate/Zero and Koi to Senkyou to Chocolate. As always, I hope you enjoy.

I’ve been following the site for about a year now and have taken a lot away from the reviews I’ve read here. So here’s to yours and The Nihon Review’s continued success.

    Thanks!

Well that was a surprise to my morning. I wish you the best of luck in whichever direction your life is heading, and thank you for making this site the place it is currently. I feel a fair bit of gratitude as the NHRV was the place where I first started discussing anime with others, about 2 years ago now, and for better or worse it was my personal stepping stone to the internet as a whole. Thanks again Sorrow-kun, hopefully the NHRV will continue to grow in the large void left by you.

That said, a 6 for Koi to Senkyou to Chocolate? Dear god man WHY? I do agree about some of the things, but a 6 is too far! TOO FAR!

It is a severe understatement to say that these reviewers are merely talented given the unparalleled level of substantive insight and engaging style with which they write. The Nihon Review is second to none when it comes to drilling down on the truly important aspects of an anime–an ability which is best demonstrated in its reviews of content that go against conventional expectations, particularly those set out by anime of more recent years.

Frankly, I was initially biased and skeptical in my negative view of anime in that it appeared to cater to only a very narrow demographic. But this site introduced me to the whole host of genres that the the medium encompasses, and I have come to understand that there is nearly always a lot of bit of everything for everyone, including and especially for myself.

I don’t know you guys, but for what it’s worth, thank you for the excellent content and for helping me enjoy what has become one my favorite hobbies. My congratulations and best wishes to Sorrow-kun.

I understand why you must depart, but you must realize that what you’ve personally written (and TNR as a whole) have entertained and interested for almost a year now. This used to be some random review website that I stumbled upon and would frequent every now and then. But as the time would pass, I became more and more intrigued. The reviews are always fair and well-written, despite the fact that this site contains various writers. I hope that this site stays healthy and constantly grows in terms of its audience numbers and the writers’ skill and craft. TNR is currently in my “Top 5 Most Visited” and it honestly is “Fabulous Max”. You guys are my #1 stop for anime reviews and I hope it stays that way.

I’ve been following the nr for about half a decade now, so I’ve read a sadly large amount of your writing. Sad to see you go, but you know when it’s time to move on. Cheers; there’s still a great team here.

But but Sorrow!! How will we ever interact with each other ever again?! Oh we play Dota together haha but anyways good luck man! Going to miss your reviews! They were always fun to read since most of the time I agreed with you 100%. Nihon won’t be the same, but lets hope for a brighter future.

Damn, your reviews were actually the only ones I read. When I reviewed some of the anime I wanted to watch I saw a pattern, it was you. You reviewed nearly 90% of the animes I watched and after that I only looked at your reviews. Now its sad to see you go, and now I also don’t have a trusted review.

Good luck for the future :)

NHRV has always been my go to place when searching for good anime to watch. It’s sad to see you go since you’re one of my most trusted reviewers. I watched all the anime you rated highly. :)
Thank you and wishing you all the best in your chosen path!

You know, I’m not such a big anime fan. But your reviews made me discover some great animes, and thanks to you, in a way, I feel more complete, because without your reviews and the site, I would never have seen some masterpieces which blew my mind. Moreover, it seems like we share the same tastes, so you were particularly reliable to me. Best of luck to you.

Wow, I am just overwhelmed by the kind words. Thank you everyone. I won’t be going too far, I’ll still be around the forum and on Twitter. But geez, just knowing my reviews are appreciated makes so much difference. Thank you again, guys.

I’ve lurked NR for about two years now. Its sad to see one of the greatest reviewers on this site resign, I always loved your reviews and took insight on what was worth watching, your opinion on quality always corresponded to my interest, you were truly an amazing addition to this website, and you will be sorely missed. :) Best of luck in your future endeavors, Az.
